Rangers could persuade Crystal Palace central midfielder James McArthur to quit the Premier League for a stunning move north of the border, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim that the Scotland international, 30, may fancy a move to Ibrox when his Palace contract expires next summer.

The Daily Record report that there will be offers for McArthur from England but “the chance to compete for trophies and play in Europe would be an advantage to Rangers if they made a move”.

It is said that the boyhood Gers fans could follow 2017 summer signing Graham Dorrans in moving from a leading English club to Ibrox.

McArthur has been a regular for most of the last three years at Premier League bottom club Palace since joining for £7.9million from Wigan in 2014.

He has not been in the starting XI for the last two games but the 32-times international has still made eight appearances in all competitions for Palace this season, seven of which have come in the Premier League.

Good move for Rangers?

Yes. Glasgow-born McArthur has extensive international and Premier League experience, both at Palace and former club Wigan. He has been in and out of the starting XI for Roy Hodgson’s side this season but that is the case for many of the players at the struggling outfit. The Scot has made 103 appearances for Palace, scoring 11 goals from his central midfield spot, and would be an upgrade on the current central midfield options available to caretaker boss Graeme Murty. He also knows the SPL from his days at Hamilton Academical.

Likely to happen?

It’s certainly possible, as McArthur is out of contract at Palace next summer and is likely to be looking for a new club from January onwards. Matching the Scot’s wage demands is likely to prove Rangers’ biggest challenge, as the actual transfer fee could be well within reach. But the 32-times international could be seduced by the unique charm of Rangers, which can offer a platform like few other clubs.
