Walsh position under threat at Everton

|

Everton director of football Steve Walsh is facing the sack, according to the Times

The newspaper claim that the recruitment specialist who was prised from Leicester City following their stunning Premier League title triumph is being questioned by the Goodison Park powerbrokers.

The Times report that Everton “are reviewing the position” of £1million-a-year Walsh, with senior figures questioning whether he is doing enough to justify a salary that is “one of the highest in the Premier League for such a position”.

It is said that Walsh is barely involved in the club’s search for a new manager after his initial recommendation of Sam Allardyce failed to materialise, and there are also question marks over the £150million invested in new players during the summer.

OPINION

A recruitment specialist will always be judged on the players he signs, or recommends his employers sign, and it is little wonder that questions are being asked at a senior level of Walsh. He arrived to great fanfare after playing a huge role in Leicester’s stunning title triumph, recommending brilliant purchases such as N’Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy. At Everton, Walsh’ midas touch has been lost. Of the major signings in the last three windows, only Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Pickford have consistently delivered, while others such as Michael Keane and Ademola Lookman may eventually come good. What is clear is that Everton have made some ropey signings (£45million for Gylfi Sigurdsson?) and the hierarchy are pointing the finger.
