Louis van Gaal is the new second favourite to be made the next permanent Everton manager, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.

SkyBet priced ex-Manchester United boss Van Gaal, 66, at 100/30 on Tuesday evening to replace Ronald Koeman in the Goodison Park dugout.

Watford manager Marco Silva (4/6) remains favourite to become Koeman’s successor amid reports that Everton have made two formal approaches for his services, while current caretaker manager David Unsworth (4/1) is now third in the running.

Sky Bet priced Unsworth as the favourite last week, at which point Van Gaal was a 33/1 outsider.

Van Gaal has been out of management since being sacked by United at the end of the 2015/16 season and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

OPINION

There are unlikely to be too many champagne corks popping among the Goodison faithful at the odds being slashed on Van Gaal taking over. The Dutchman has had a glittering managerial career at some of Europe’s top clubs, most notably at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but his United reign was memorable for some stultifying football in which the cloak of caution was thrown over the Old Trafford pitch every other week. He has won seven league titles with four different clubs, but Van Gaal’s best days are behind him.
