Leeds United are in line for a stunning £4million windfall if Danny Rose quits Tottenham for £40million in January, according to reports.

The Times claim Manchester United are preparing to table a sensational £40million bid for Rose in the January window after manager Jose Mourinho identified him as the solution to his need for a dynamic left-back.

It is said that Rose, who has publicly questioned the ambition of Spurs, will not force an exit before the end of the season but that would not stop United tabling a huge offer.

Leeds would benefit if the England international does make a mega-money move due to the sell-on terms incorporated in the transfer that took him from Elland Road to White Hart Lane as a 17-year-old in the summer of 2007.

Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay reported on his personal Twitter account in 2015 that a clause in the deal means Leeds are entitled to 10 per cent of any profit made on Rose’s sale.

Rose joined Spurs from Leeds for £1million and if he were to now leave his club for £40million, Leeds would get 10 per cent of £39 million, which is £3.9million.

OPINION

The pain for Leeds fans from seeing Rose bomb up and down the left flank for Tottenham will be doubled if he was to do the same for Man United. There is little love lost between Leeds and United, and seeing one of their academy products ripping it up for Manchester would be difficult. Nevertheless, Rose left Elland Road a decade ago when the club were in dire financial straits and the club can be proud of their involvement in his development from a raw teenager into a world-class left-back. The super-smart move of the 10 per cent sell-on clause means Leeds will be handed a massive financial windfall that they can use to strengthen their own squad, especially timely given that they need to invest in their own squad in the January window to boost their hopes of securing a play-off spot. It appears inevitable that Rose will quit Spurs next summer, although a winter deal would be more difficult to do given  Spurs’ trophy ambitions.
