Dimitar Berbatov has insisted that Tottenham will be able to hang on to all their key players as they prepare to rule Europe in the coming years.

The former Spurs striker, 36, has been blown away by the transformation of the team under Mauricio Pochettino and claimed they are no longer a side that the star players such as Harry Kane need to leave in order to further their career.

Tottenham have secured second and third place league finishes in the last two seasons and are in the title mix again in the current campaign as well as already securing a place in the Champions League knockout stages after a historic win over Real Madrid.

“I think in a couple of years they will be one of the biggest teams in Europe,” Berbatov told the Sun of his former club.

“They are building a great stadium, they have a great squad, a great coach, the training ground is fantastic. They have everything to be a great team.

“Footballers speak with each other constantly and everybody is telling me Pochettino is a great manager. A great man-manager.

“I’m sure in a couple of years Spurs will be the team you want to go to and stay,  not want to leave for a better place. Kane is the captain, he is Mr Spurs there. I’m sure if he sees  that Spurs are growing, winning and are the team most players want to go to, he is going to stay.

“When I visited, I just told the coach and players the only thing missing is a trophy — but they will get that soon.”

OPINION

As a former Spur who quit for Manchester United in 2008 in a move that broke the hearts of supporters, Berbatov has a real understanding of what separates the elite from the rest. He can see that the north Londoners are building something special, and made it clear that if he was faced with the same decision again, he would not have been so eager to hop into the back of a chauffeur-driven car and motor to Old Trafford. The new Tottenham is a destination for outstanding players and not just emerging ones. That is one of the most significant by-products of the Pochettino revolution.
