Manchester United are preparing to table a £40million bid for Danny Rose in the January window, according to the Times.

The newspaper claim that Jose Mourinho’s side intend to test Tottenham’s resolves with a huge offer for the left-back, whose future is under the microscope after a series of interviews expressing his frustration at White Hart Lane.

The Times report that Rose has made up his mind to commit himself to Tottenham until the end of the season and will not attempt to force an exit before that point.

Rose was left out of the Arsenal game on fitness grounds last weekend and responded by saying he was “fuming and angry” at the decision of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Good move for Tottenham?

Speculation over Rose is not going to go away. The left-back’s future became a massive issue the moment he publicly questioned Spurs’ ambition with an interview last summer. Would £40m for a 27-year-old full-back who appears determined to leave for a bigger contract elsewhere be good business for Tottenham? Only if they replace him with someone as good, or potentially better. Up to the point he suffered a serious knee injury in January, Rose was the best left-back in the Premier League. It is unlikely that Spurs can source someone better.

Likely to happen?

In January? Almost certainly, not. At the end of the season? All bets are off. Spurs aren’t going to sell to a title rival in the middle of the season, especially when they have trophy ambitions, which include the Premier League and the Champions League knockout stages.
