Liverpool have made an approach for Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet as they aim to beat other Premier League clubs to his signature, according to the Daily Mail.

The Mail claim Liverpool have enquired about France U-21 international Lenglet, who played 90 minutes as Sevilla came from behind to draw 3-3 against the Reds in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old centre-back was a £4.4million signing for Sevilla in the January window, and has become a key player for the club, making 17 appearances so far this season.

His contract, which runs until 2021, is said to have a £28million buy-out clause, and several top European clubs are now interested in the young Frenchman.

Liverpool and Arsenal have made enquiries about the player, with Premier League rivals Manchester City and Manchester United also interested. Spanish giants Barcelona are also keeping tabs on Lenglet.

Good move for Liverpool?

It is obvious to everyone where Liverpool’s problems lie, and Lenglet would seemingly be a good start as they look to shore up their defence.

The French youth international is strong, quick, and comfortable in possession. He is also versatile, and can play at left-back as well as centre-back.

However, he would also represent a bit of a risk for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp is in need of a player who can come in and make an immediate impact on their backline.

Lenglet, while showing much promise, would most likely take time to adjust to England and the style of football here, and therefore may be one for the future instead of one for the present.

Likely to happen?

For £28million, Lenglet would seem to represent brilliant value for money in today’s market, and would not burn a hole in any Premier League team’s pockets.

Liverpool are in dire need of a defender in the January market, but whether it will be Lenglet is hard to say.

The club may instead look to reignite their move for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk, or look elsewhere in the Premier League for a proven defender.
