Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has claimed that he could still sign a new contract with the club as the January transfer window approaches.

When January begins Can, 23, will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement committing himself to an overseas club, with Juventus the frontrunners for his signature.

Now, Can has spoken out about the contract dispute and where his future may lie, suggesting that it is highly feasible he could remain at Anfield.

Asked by the Liverpool Echo if he would still be a Liverpool player next season, Can replied: “Why do you ask me this? Really, I concentrate on this season and let my agent handle all the rest.

“It is not about money, that’s all I can say. Yes I could (sign a pre-contract with another club next month), but tomorrow I could also sign for Liverpool. We’ll see.”

As reported by the Echo, Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that he wants to keep Can at Anfield, but the German international’s demands for a release clause to be inserted into his new contract has meant talks have stalled.

OPINION

It is interesting to hear Can’s response when asked about his future. The young German is obviously agitated by all the speculation and clearly wants the situation resolved as soon as possible. His willingness to speak about the dispute is however promising for Liverpool fans, as he has admitted he may still sign a new contract with the club. That means that he has not made his mind up about going abroad, and there may still be hope for Klopp to secure his signature for several more years. It is a big statement, and would be huge for Liverpool if he stayed.
