Emre Can’s days as a Liverpool player are coming to an end as his contract stalemate shows no signs of ending, according to the Mail.

The newspaper claim the Germany international is “almost certain” to quit the Merseyside giants when his current deal expires next summer.

The Mail report that stand-off is down to the midfielder, 23, requesting a release clause in any new agreement, something the Liverpool hierarchy have refused to entertain.

It is said “there appears to be no solution” to the deadlock in talks and Can will be able to start negotiating with clubs on the continent in 58 days about signing a pre-contract.

Juventus and Bayern Munich are among the clubs keeping a close eye on the central midfielder, who signed for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2014.

Good move for Liverpool?

It is never good for any elite club for a key first-teamer to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer. More so, when that player is just 23 and has his best years ahead of him. Can is far from the perfect Premier League central midfielder and has much to learn – his tendency to need an extra touch in the midfield maelstrom drives supporters up the wall – but he is capable of performances that Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum are unable to match.

Likely to happen?

Barring a U-turn from either Liverpool or Can’s camp, an exit now appears inevitable. Worryingly for the club, a deal can be done in January for the German to agree terms with an overseas club, and that now seems the most likely course of events.
