Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their anger and disappointment at Mike Gordon’s claim that the club are unlikely to pull off any major signings in January.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon has revealed in a new book about Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool believe the opportunity to actually do business in January is becoming more difficult.

In an interview with author Rafael Honigstein as part of his new book on Klopp, entitled Bring the Noise, Gordon is asked about the club’s failure to bring in any players last January after Sadio Mane’s loss to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gordon said: “I would regret it if we hadn’t tried to bring in additional players. But we clearly did try. The availability of players in the January window is continuing to diminish, it’s now an anomaly if you’re able to do something.

“Showing discipline (in the transfer market) and staying true to your principles is really important, and that’s one of the reasons we didn’t add to the squad. We tried. And the same goes for all windows.

“We look for any advantage and opportunity to improve.”

Julian Brandt and Christian Pulisic were two of the players linked with a move to Anfield last January but neither materialised and Liverpool’s title challenge sank without trace during a terrible run in January.

In the last five years Liverpool have bought or loaned just four players in January, Stephen Caulker, Marko Grujic, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge.

Fans believe they are being prepared to be let-down in the forthcoming winter window even though the team are fifth in the Premier League and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Some Liverpool supporters called on FSG to sell up, while others sarcastically said money will be left over for a mammoth spending spree next summer and one stated that ‘best signing ever’ Luis Suarez was purchased in a January window.
