Top-flight Serbian outfit FK Partizan are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United forward Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Sports outlet Novosti claims that the club, who are currently favourites to qualify for the Europa League knockout stages, have been in contact with the 23-year-old and they are keen to land him on a loan deal.

Good news for Newcastle?

Given the amount of time he has spent on the football pitch, it appears that Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is not a huge admirer of Mitrovic this season.

The forward has failed to start a single Premier League match this season and he has only made a total of five appearances in all competitions.

However, the Serbia international has been effective when given the opportunity, notching up two goals in the process.

The Magpies have recently suffered a massive dip in form which has seen them slip to 13th position in the league table, just four points above the relegation zone.

In fact, Newcastle have only managed to score one goal in their last four Premier League games and despite the lack of efficiency in front of goal, Benitez still insists with placing Mitrovic on the bench.

Allowing the forward to be sold might come back and haunt the club in the long run but if the right offer is placed on the table, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mitrovic depart from St James’ Park.

Likely to happen?

Mitrovic could easily be tempted into returning to his former club with the prospect of winning silverware and playing regular European football.

However, it appears that the Newcastle fans are still backing the striker as they are desperate to see him enjoy more minutes on the pitch and this could persuade him to stay.

If Benitez continues to leave the Serbian out in the cold and persist with the likes of Dwight Gayle and Joselu during the upcoming festive period, Mitrovic might decide to call it a day despite having three years remaining on his contract.
