Louis van Gaal has revealed to the Daily Mail he is yet to be contacted by Everton after being linked with the vacant Goodison Park position.

Van Gaal became a surprise candidate for the vacant Toffees job after the odds on him replacing compatriot Ronald Koeman tumbled on Tuesday.

SkyBet currently place him as fourth-favourite to take the job at 8/1, with Watford’s Marco Silva still the bookies’ first choice.

The Daily Mail report that the Dutchman, who has been out of work since leaving Manchester United 18 months ago, is thought to be open to a return to football.

He did however insist that there has been no contact from Everton.

“I’ve not yet been asked,” he said, as quoted by the Mail.

OPINION

Just why the odds on van Gaal tumbled on Tuesday is unknown, but it is an interesting name to enter the fray at this point in the search. Everton’s board have been on the hunt for their next manager for a month now, and van Gaal is an extremely late addition to the party. His failure to capture the hearts of the Manchester United fans has clouded his reputation somewhat, but it must not be forgotten that he is a manager of high calibre. He is a highly-decorated and vastly experienced manager, and has managed across Europe. Whether he is what Everton need at the current moment is however doubtful.
