Manchester United fans took to Twitter to lay into Henrikh Mkhitaryan for his performance in their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.
The Armenia international kept his place in the United starting XI despite a series of mediocre performances in recent weeks as he made his 10th league start from the 11 matches the team have played.
But Mkhitaryan was hauled off after 62 minutes by manager Jose Mourinho after being handed the playmaker role in a new-look 3-4-1-2 formation.
Chelsea were 1-0 ahead at that point after Alvaro Morata had broken the deadlock with his eighth goal for the club and his first since September.
Antonio Conte’s side remain fourth but have climbed to within one point of second-placed United, who now trail leaders Manchester City by eight points.
The United faithful were deeply disappointed and singled out Mkhitaryan for criticism, with a section of supporters calling for him to be axed and even sold in the forthcoming window after another poor performance.
