Arsenal and Chelsea make contact with Ancelotti – report

|

Carlo Ancelotti has been contacted by both Arsenal and Chelsea as he looks to move back to England, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Ancelotti, a three-times Champions League-winning manager, is currently one of the favourites to take over from Gian Piero Ventura as coach of the Italian national team, after the Azzurri failed for qualify for a World Cup for the first time since 1958.

The former Chelsea boss has been out of work since being sacked as coach of Bayern Munich at the end of September.

He was at the German club for only one full season, leading the Bavarians to the Bundesliga title after replacing Pep Guardiola.

Ancelotti was sacked after their heaviest Champions League group-stage defeat in 21 years, a 3-0 loss to Paris St-Germain.

The report claims that Ancelotti would not turn down the chance to come to his country’s rescue, but claims that his first priority would actually be a move back to the Premier League.

OPINION

Ancelotti is one of the most-decorated coaches of the modern era, and is the only manager to have won the Champions League three times. Most teams would jump at the chance to have the Italian at the helm, including many fans of both Arsenal and Chelsea. The future of Arsene Wenger is anyone’s guess after the Frenchman signed a new two-year contract last season, but if the Gunners fail to impress again this season then the fans will inevitably turn on him again and he could be on his way. The reported interest from Chelsea is more surprising considering the circumstances of Ancelotti’s sacking in 2011. While there are reported rifts between Conte and the senior figures within the club, any move to replace him at the current moment would seem unlikely.
