Newcastle United have had several brilliant performers so far this campaign as they sit 11th in the Premier League during the international break and surprise package Rob Elliot has been one of the best.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper has managed to find a new level of consistency to his game this campaign and not many would have predicted it.

Rafael Benitez was actively pursuing a new number one in the summer transfer window, but turned to the Irishman when that failed.

Elliot was on the fringes of the Magpies squad last season and made just three senior appearances, but a serious knee injury disrupted the first half of his campaign.

The shot-stopper has never really established himself as the first-choice option in goal since his arrival in 2011 and injuries plus his form have prevented that from happening.

However, he can no longer be considered a fringe player at St James’ Park and has turned into a key performer for Newcastle following their return to the top flight.

The North East club have conceded just 10 goals from their opening 11 Premier League games and Elliot has played every single minute between the sticks.

Elliot has proven to be a brilliant shot-stopper and is a senior figure in the changing room.

The goalkeeper has kept his side in several games already this campaign and is a big part behind the club’s decent start.

He still has areas of his game that can be improved, with his range of passing meaning he is not quite a modern-day goalkeeper.

However, he has more than justified his place in the team and Newcastle boss Benitez will be delighted with his performances.
