Leeds United were demolished 4-1 by rampant Wolves on Wednesday night to highlight the gap between the best team in the Championship and some of the other promotion hopefuls.

Yet another defeat for Thomas Christiansen’s side – their eighth in their last 10 matches in all competitions – swiftly punctured the balloon of optimism generated by their weekend win against Middlesbrough.

On a wet, windy night at Molineux, Wolves eased to their biggest home win of the season to open up a four-point lead at the top of the Championship.

The hosts led 2-0 at the break thanks to Barry Douglas’ superb free-kick and Ivan Cavaleiro’s smart finish and a mini Leeds revival inspired by a stunning Ezgjan Alioski goal was over when team-mate Ronaldo Vieira was then sent off for a second booking.

Diogo Jota ran through to chip a third for the home side before substitute Helder Costa’s clinching penalty secured the three points for the big-spending Midlands outfit.

The same mistakes are being made as the harsh reality is brought home that Christiansen’s side have an awful lot of improving to do to mount a genuine promotion challenge.

For all the excellence of Samuel Saiz, the one man who consistently delivers for Leeds and is above criticism, the team are a mediocre one who struggle to deliver against fellow promotion rivals.

This Is Futbol has analysed three things we learned about Leeds from Wednesday’s dispiriting defeat, including why a big-name summer signing is a mystery and how three senior players must be frozen out.
