Aston Villa decided to sell defender Nathan Baker to Bristol City in the summer and a lot of fans were baffled by the decision initially.

The 26-year-old completed his move to Championship rivals Bristol City in the transfer window for a reported £4million fee and ended his spell in the Midlands.

The Villa academy product made 123 senior appearances for them and the centre-back became a consistent performer at centre-back last season in particular.

Baker’s form for Bristol City this campaign has been impressive, but Steve Bruce’s decision to sell him has been fully vindicated.

The manager decided to axe Baker so that he could use a new-look combination of James Chester and John Terry in defence.

They have played every game so far in the league together and are building a brilliant centre-back partnership.

Chester, 28, was an ever-present in the side last season alongside Baker and the Wales International is a consistent defender for the Midlands giants.

Meanwhile, Premier League legend Terry has made an immediate impact since his summer arrival and slotted in seamlessly to the starting XI.

The 36-year-old captain has immense leadership qualities and his experience is having a positive impact on the entire side.

The defence appear to be getting better each week and have kept five clean sheets in their last six league games.

Villa fans should now be pleased with the sale of Baker as it has lead them to find their new formidable centre-back partnership, while Chris Samba acts as cover.
