Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Cologne striker Jhon Cordoba, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that representatives from the Midlands giants are looking at the Bundesliga hitman.

It is understood that Steve Bruce is chasing another centre-forward following the departure of Ross McCormack and is expecting the back of owner Tony Xia after improvements on the pitch.

The report details that a January deal could be on the cards as German club Colgone could be willing to offload the 24-year-old in January after his indifferent start.

Cordoba only moved to Cologne in the summer and has scored two goals in 10 games across all competitions, which did include a brilliant long-range strike against Arsenal in the Europa League.

Good move for Villa?

Villa do already have Scott Hogan, Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia as options in their squad, but an extra body to help them over the line in a potential promotion race is a smart move.

Cordoba has not made a blistering start to life at Cologne, but has shown he can score goals and has strong experience in top-flight football.

The Colombian has scored 10 goals in 58 games in the Bundesliga, while also racking up 54 games in La Liga.

He has decent pace and physicality, something that would probably make him a big success in the English leagues.

Cordoba would be able to succeed in the Championship and freshening up the attacking competition would be a good move.

Likely to happen?

There seems to be several things pointing to the fact that this deal could happen as Villa manager Bruce is confident of new arrivals, with his side currently seventh in the league.

Cologne manager Peter Stoger could also be tempted to cash in on Cordoba despite him only joining recently on a four year deal.

The major stumbling block could be convincing the player to drop down to the Championship as he has spent most of his career so far in the top flight.

However, the Championship saw some big stars arrive in the summer and there is potential for Cordoba to become another in the New Year.
