Tottenham eye January striker signing

|

Tottenham are keen to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, according to the Mail.

The newspaper claim that the north Londoners have been keeping tabs on Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun as one possible target.

The Mail report that scouts from Tottenham jetted out to watch Tosun in action for his country last Friday but he failed to make an impression as Turkey lost 3-0 to Iceland.

It said that Palace tried to sign Tosun in August after he scored 27 goals for club and country last season.

OPINION

Tosun fits the profile of the type of striker who Spurs usually target, although, at 26, he is a couple of years older than the rising stars they tend to prefer. Fernando Llorente can be considered a one-off after joining from Swansea in the summer window, a sticking plaster to cover a gaping hole in the centre-forward reinforcements roster. But the World Cup winner is 32 and Dutchman Vincent Janssen, 23, does not cut the mustard for a top Premier League club. Spurs clearly need a medium-term option who can score goals when Harry Kane is absent. Tosun has a fine record at Besiktas, where he scored 24 in all competitions last season, and plenty of Champions League experience. He is no Kane, but could be a decent deputy for the main man.
