Jamie Redknapp has said that Tottenham will not win the Premier League until they improve their away form against the top six teams.

Redknapp was talking on the Sky Sports coverage of the game after Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime.

It was a game of few chances but Anthony Martial won it for Man United in the 81st minute after a kick from David de Gea was headed on by Romelu Lukaku.

Tottenham were without talismanic striker Harry Kane for the game after he limped out of the Liverpool game last weekend with a hamstring strain.

And, despite a brilliant away record this season, Tottenham’s form against the top six away from home has been very poor since Mauricio Pochettino took over.

“This hasn’t just happened because Harry Kane hasn’t played today,” said Redknapp.

“There are so  many games where even when he has played, Spurs haven’t played with that personality I’ve been talking about.

“Now, they have to improve this. If they want to go and win the title, they have to go and start winning away from home against the top six.

“That’s what the teams that win it predominantly do. Their record is not good enough.

He [Pochettino} is a manager we all speak about as being at the highest level, but nine points from a possible 48 away from home against the top six is not good enough.”

OPINION

People criticise Jose Mourinho for setting up so negatively away against teams like Liverpool. But he gets valuable points and can even sneak a win by playing that way and Redknapp is right that Pochettino has to improve this for Spurs. Nine points from a possible 48 against top six sides is a blot on Pochettino’s record at Tottenham and he must look to change things this season if he wants to realise his dream of winning the league.
