Josh Onomah may have to quit Tottenham to play in his favourite position, according to a reliable journalist.

Football.London Spurs writer Alasdair Gold claimed in a question-and-answer session on Monday that the attacking midfielder, 20, models himself on Spurs Mousa Dembele and sees himself playing in central midfield “in the future”.

But Gold explained that this is slightly at odds with manager Mauricio Pochettino’s view of the youngster, who is currently on a season-long loan at Aston Villa.

Pochettino is said to be keen for Onomah to be used in more attacking roles and that the player “will have to adapt” or move to another club to play regularly where he wants.

The youngster has made 32 senior Spurs appearances, the majority of which have been as a late substitute.

He has got more game time at Villa, where he has started seven of his 12 matches.

OPINION

It appears that Onomah’s opinion is somewhat different to that of Pochettino, who is keen for the rising star to be more versatile and adapt to the needs of the team rather than just specialise in one role at his age. The 20-year-old has been highly thought of at Tottenham for some time, and many would rather him be in the matchday squad that 2016 flop signing Georges-Kevin NKoudou. But Pochettino has firm ideas, and high demands of Spurs’ players, including the best of their young talent. There is only going to be one winner on positional desires.
