Steven Gerrard has heaped praise on Tottenham striker Harry Kane but pointed out one problem – he wishes he was a Liverpool player.

After not scoring for the whole of August, Kane has now scored 11 goals in September, including five in two Champions League games.

He has also scored two gaols for England in September and will be hoping to fire them towards World Cup qualification in their game against Slovenia on Thursday.

A win will be enough to secure their place in Russia next summer.

Talking to Sky Sports, Gerrard said: “He is the in-form player in world football, in terms of goals scored and how he is playing.

“I love the player and I love the character. I watch his interviews a lot and I have also met him on a couple of occasions.

“I think he is a perfect role model and an ambassador for the game. I love the way he goes about his work.

“I am glad he is English, I wish he was a Red!”

OPINION

Harry Kane is the man of the hour and no one will be betting against him scoring the goals that will take England to the World Cup next summer. The big question for Kane is whether he can then produce on the biggest stage of them all – possibly the only critique people could have of him at the moment. As for him being a Liverpool player – there aren’t many teams who wouldn’t welcome Kane as their first-choice striker, but would he fit in with the style of play Jurgen Klopp plays? They already have a talented old-fashioned striker in Daniel Sturridge and he spends most of his time on the bench. By contrast, Kane and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino seem like a match made in heaven and Poch has already said jokingly that he is “in love” with Kane. Tottenham fans will be hoping the love affair goes on for a long time.
