Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that defender Phil Jones is likely to be available against Tottenham at the weekend.

The 25-year-old limped off in United’s league defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday during the first-half and fans were fearing the worst due to his history of injury setbacks.

However, he was named as a substitute on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup win over Swansea and Mourinho has claimed that he expects the centre-back to be in contention against Spurs.

“I think Jones will be ready [against Spurs] because he was on the bench [against Swansea] and he told me that in case I need him, he will be ready. So he will be even better for Saturday,” he told Sky Sports.

Jones inclusion on Saturday will be a big boost for United as the England international has been a key player so far this season.

He has started in every league game so far and is highly-rated by his manager.

Spurs will still feel confident of getting at the United defence when they travel to Old Trafford as they have in-form Harry Kane ready to strike.

Kane has already scored 13 goals in 12 games so far this season in all competitions and will have his sights on ripping United apart.

OPINION

Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford between United and Spurs is a huge clash as the teams are locked together on 20 points in the league. They are both chasing current leaders Manchester City and will view the weekend as an opportunity to lay down a title marker. One player that should have an idea of how to handle prolifc centre-forward Kane is his England teammate Jones, with the duo often linking up together with the national side. It could be one of the key battles in deciding the outcome of the game and tactician Mourinho will be delighted to have his chief defender ready to go against Spurs.
