At least four Man United players are set to get new contracts in the “next few weeks” according to the Sun

The report claims that Jose Mourinho doesn’t want to lose anyone on a free transfer in the summer and names Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones as the players set to get extensions imminently.

Mata, Herrera and Fellaini are all out of contract in the summer and that means they are free to talk to foreign clubs in January about a free transfer in the summer.

Now it looks like Mourinho wants to head that possibility off at the pass by tying them down to new contracts before Christmas.

The trio have reportedly been in talks for weeks about improved deals. Phil Jones has had a successful start to the season and is also set to be offered a new contract, with his current one expiring in 2019.

“You’ll be seeing a huge raft of renewals over the coming weeks before the festive period,” an Old Trafford source was quoted as saying in the Sun.

“There are at least four and possibly more all getting rises and extensions on Jose’s say so.”

OPINION

Herrera, Mata and Fellaini are all important members of the Mourinho squad and it would be a disaster if they lost all three of them. The trio have reportedly been in talks for weeks over new contracts and it sounds like Mourinho is expecting to receive positive news soon. From United’s point of view they would want the deals to be tied up before January and the possibility of heads being turned by lucrative terms, with clubs able to bag the players without paying a fee.
