Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is confident of signing Tottenham defender Danny Rose for £45million next summer, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper claim Rose is prepared to snub interest from Chelsea to join United next summer instead as he has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford ahead of the World Cup in June.

The Daily Star report that United boss Jose Mourinho has already identified Rose as one of his main targets in 2018 and is “confident” of landing the England international for a fee of £45million.

Rose has not played since suffering knee ligament damage in a game at Sunderland in January.

He underwent surgery in May and has still not featured for Spurs this season, but has completed his rehabilitation and is expected to return to training within the next week.

Rose penned a new deal with Spurs in September 2016 worth around £75,000-a-week that tied him to the club until 2021.

OPINION

With his speed and dynamism going forward, Rose would be a huge asset to United, whose current roster of left-backs all lack the Tottenham man’s attacking prowess. Mourinho has clearly decided that Luke Shaw is not the answer and the likes of Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind are not natural fits on the left side of defence. It is easy to see why the Portugese regards Rose as the ideal solution given the brilliant form he was in before he suffered knee trouble in January. Spurs will not want to lose Rose, but Ben Davies is only a notch or two below the England international in an attacking sense, and offers greater reliability in defence.
