Jamie Carragher claimed on Monday Night Football that Bill Kenwright and Farhad Moshiri are locked in a power struggle over the identity of the new Everton manager.

Boyhood Everton fan Carragher delivered the bombshell that club chairman Bill Kenwright wants to appoint either caretaker David Unsworth as permanent boss or give the job to a proven British Premier League boss like Sean Dyche or Sam Allardyce.

By contrast, majority shareholder Moshiri wants a more glamorous name who will be more in keeping with his grand ambitions for Merseysiders.

Everton have been linked with Watford boss Marco Silva as well as available duo Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti.

“What I know about Everton is there is a major split at the top of the club,” Liverpool legend Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme in the build-up to Newcastle United’s Premier League clash against Burnley. “Bill Kenwright wants to give the job to Unsworth or a British manager like Dyche or Allardyce.

“Moshiri is thinking differently. There is a new stadium [planned], £150million spent on new players this summer and he is looking at the next three to four years.”

Unsworth has been impressive as the Everton Under-23 manager, steering the team to the Premier League 2 title last season.

The former England international has lost his first two matches as caretaker boss, a League Cup defeat to Chelsea and Sunday’s Premier League loss at the hands of Leicester.

OPINION

It is understandable that Moshiri wants to bring a household name into the Everton dugout but he needs to be more realistic. Silva is burgeoning his reputation at Watford, while Ancelotti is unlikely to return to the Premier League any time soon as he prepares to fill his back pocket with a money-spinning China deal. Unsworth seems ready and determined to go up the next level and take charge of transforming Everton’s fortunes. If he manages to get results in the upcoming weeks, Moshiri might have no choice but to bow to Kenwright’s greater knowledge of the Premier League and hand the former defender the top job.
