Joey Barton has claimed that Everton are “bang in trouble” following their defeat to Leicester and believes they should be pursuing their new full-time manager right now.

Caretaker boss David Unsworth saw his Toffees side suffer a 2-0 defeat away to Leicester on Sunday, with Jamie Vardy and Demarai Gray on the scoresheet for the hosts.

The Merseyside club suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League and are still in the relegation zone.

They are yet to bring in a new manager to Goodison Park since the dismissal of Ronald Koeman and Unsworth’s temporary spell has started with two defeats.

Everton now turn their attention to a Europa League clash away to Lyon, before a pivotal home clash with Watford next weekend in the Premier League.

Barton has delivered a brutal assessment of the Toffees and insists they have found themselves in the middle of a relegation battle after the opening 10 games.

He also suggested that the club’s chiefs should be in contact with either Sam Allardyce or Sean Dyche about becoming their new manager.

“Everton hierarchy should be on the phone to Big Sam or Burnley asking to speak to Sean Dyche. Don’t kid yourself, they’re bang in trouble,” Barton wrote on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

The Premier League table is now beginning to take shape and the fact that Everton are in the bottom three right now is a major concern given 10 games have gone already. They won’t be able to do much until January when they simply must sign a new centre-forward and must keep battling for the meantime. The Toffees are lacking quality in the final third to seriously hurt opponents and a failed summer window has massively hurt them. However, Barton’s brutal assessment that Everton are in relegation trouble may be far fetched as there is only six points between eighth and 18th.
