Chelsea fans took to Twitter to slaughter Gary Cahill for his first-half display in their Champions League clash against Roma.

Two goals from Stephan El Shaarawy put the Italian club 2-0 up at half-time of the showdown in Rome to give the visitors a mountain to climb in the second period.

Cahill returned to the Chelsea starting XI after being omitted at the weekend when they secured a 1-0 Premier League win against Bournemouth.

The England international was selected on the right side of a three-man defence that also included David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger, flanked by wing-back pair Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

Cahill was not directly at fault for either of El Shaarawy’s goals, which came after 42 seconds through a brilliant strike and then an opportunist goal after a Rudiger error.

But Chelsea fans took to social media en masse to lay into their 31-year-old most senior central defender.
