Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen has said that he told goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald he “expected more” from him after he dropped him for the game against Reading.

Summer signing Wiedwald had been the number one keeper for Christiansen up until this game, starting all 11 of the Championship games up until last weekend.

However, after some poor performances, Christiansen took the decision to replace him with fellow summer signing, 35-year-old Andy Lonergan.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of this Saturday’s game with Bristol City, Christiansen revealed what he said to Wiedwald.

“I had my speak with him and told him that I expected more from him,” said Christiansen, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“There has been a good reaction from him. He understood the reason that I gave him.”

It is expected that Lonergan will keep his place for the game against Bristol City on Saturday.

OPINION

It’s always tough for a keeper when he gets dropped – their position is normally solid unless they get injured. Christiansen has said that the reaction he got from his new keeper was good on being told the news, but Lonergan should keep his place for the game against Bristol City. Wiedwald will have to bide his time and hope to get a second chance, but it looks like the number one slot is Lonergan’s to lose now.
