Josh Windass will be available for Rangers’ clash against Celtic on Saturday as he avoids facing any disciplinary action after making gestures at Partick Thistle fans on Friday.

There was the possibility that the 23-year-old could have been sidelined at the weekend and undergone a match ban, but the Scottish FA have reviewed the situation and felt it didn’t require action.

Sky Sports Scotland shared the news on their official Twitter account on Monday afternoon.

The broadcaster said: “The compliance officer reviews the incident and did not consider it a breach”.

The verdict meant that he could be chosen by boss Pedro Caixinha to face the Hoops at the Ibrox in the first Old Firm clash of the season.

Rangers will face Partick Thistle again in the Scottish League Cup quarter final just four days after their clash in the Premiership which ended with a 2-2 draw.

Following their trip to the Firhill Stadium, Pedro Caixinha’s side will host their Glaswegian rivals for the first time since the end of last season.

OPINION

The outcome of the Josh Windass review will be incredibly reassuring to the manager, fans and his team mates as it will ensure the Pedro Caixinha has as many options as possible for the Old Firm clash. The boss has already announced that skipper Lee Wallace won’t be available for this week’s fixtures because of injury, and if Windass had suffered a match-ban it would have been a significant blow. It would be wise now for Caixinha to leave the midfielder out of the League Cup match on Tuesday as the negative reception from fans could create a bad atmosphere and Caixinha doesn’t need anything to distract his team for the two big tasks at hand.
