Pablo Bentancur, the agent of Hull striker Abel Hernandez, has revealed that his client had the opportunity to sign for Premier League new boys Newcastle United during the transfer window.

Hernandez’s agent claims that bitter West Midlands rivals Aston Villa and Birmingham also had a strong interest in the 27-year-old before he suffered a serious injury which will keep him sidelined for the next six months.

“He had an important market, strong interest from Aston Villa and Birmingham, they wanted him at all costs, and there was also a chance to go to Newcastle,” said Bentancur, as quoted by the Hull Daily Mail in their live blog [Monday 10:03am].

“It’s a bad thing, but football is the way it is, Abel has strength and is young, he will be back.”

Hernandez had enjoyed a brilliant start to the season with Hull before he was struck down with an Achilles injury.

The Uruguay international forward scored three goals in three Championship appearances, with all them coming by the way of a hat-trick against relegation candidates Burton Albion.

Good move for Newcastle?

Newcastle needed a striker in the summer but Hernandez wouldn’t have been the right man – even before his injury the ex-Palermo striker has had no luck with injuries in his whole career and his goal scoring record in the Premier League is sketchy to say the least. Joselu. Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all better options that the unfortunate Hull ace.

Likely to happen?

It seem’s doubtful that Rafa Benitez will want to look at Hernandez again in the future. Unfortunately, the striker may lose a lot of his pace and ability after spending such a long spell out on the sidelines and may even struggle to get back into the Hull side. His agent Bentacur could also be fabricating this a bit just to spice up a bit of interest in his client by saying a Premier League club wanted him.
