Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has responded to Tim Sherwood’s claim that Harry Kane could leave Spurs in the summer if they don’t win a trophy.

Talking to Sky Sports earlier in the week, Sherwood had said: “The only way they can keep him is to win something this year. That something might not be the Carabao Cup, it might have to be the league or the FA Cup.”

Talking at his press conference ahead of the West Ham game on Saturday, Pochettino said: “I respect every single opinion. And of course Tim has the right to speak about Tottenham and Harry, of course.

“But that is a question more for Harry Kane, what he wants to do. And only Harry Kane has the power and the decision to say what he wants to do in the future.”

This comes on the back of Kane getting the only nomination for an English player on the 55-man shortlist for the Fifpro World XI.

The shortlist was compiled from votes from 25,000 professional footballers.

Pochettino added: “I have told you that Harry is one of the best strikers in the world and this is the confirmation.”

OPINION

Kane is a Tottenham player and a Tottenham fan. Pochettino is building a long-term project at Spurs and in footballing terms it’s about as good as it gets in the Premier League. However, at some point money has to come into the equation. Tottenham don’t pay enough and big clubs are going to start sniffing around. If Spurs don’t win anything soon then players could start itching for a move. And if they don’t qualify for the Champions League, it could prove terminal. Pochettino is going to find out that off-the-pitch events could have more bearing on his squad than those on it.
