Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has heaped huge praise on summer recruit Davinson Sanchez for his impressive start to the campaign and claimed that he is a “really good signing”.

The 21-year-old completed his move to the North London club from Dutch giants Ajax during the summer transfer window on a six-year contract in a deal worth a club record £42million.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has shown great faith in the youngster and slotted him into a back three alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

Since Sanchez became a regular in the starting lineup, Spurs have remained unbeaten in three matches in all competitions, winning two including an excellent result against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek.

The Colombia international demonstrated that he could deal with one of the world’s best strikers in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his performance was crucial in helping Tottenham pick up their first win at Wembley Stadium this season.

Speaking to the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on TalkSPORT (16 September, 7am), former Tottenham ace Hoddle is confident that the young defender can become a huge success at the club.

“Sanchez is an out-and-out defender,” he said.

“[Toby] Alderweireld and [Jan] Vertonghen are wonderful defenders but also they are wonderful players on the ball. They use the ball, pick people off and come out with the ball.

“Sanchez is not going to particularly be like that but if they play that three at the back you can see that being a really nice balance.

“He just wants to defend and he is quick and aggressive. I think he is a really good signing.”

OPINION

When Sanchez joined Tottenham in the summer, it was hard to imagine him starting every week given the excellent partnership between Alderweireld and Vertonghen in the past couple of seasons. However, Pochettino has elected to go with a back three and the Colombian has fitted into the side perfectly and it is incredible to think that he is experiencing his debut campaign in England. Tottenham were defensively solid without the youngster but now, with three central defenders, Spurs can also afford to push more bodies in attack which has given them a fantastic balance. Sanchez was outstanding for Ajax last season and he could become a real fan favourite at Tottenham if he continues to deliver the goods on a weekly basis.
