Tony Cascarino has heaped huge praise on Tottenham talisman Harry Kane and compared him to former Premier League midfielders Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes.

The 24-year-old produced a stunning performance for Spurs in the Champions League in midweek, notching up a hat-trick against Apoel Nicosia in a 3-0 victory.

After failing to score a single goal in the month of August, the England international has now scored nine goals in nine appearances for the North London club.

Kane is currently the leading goalscoring in the elite European club competition this season with five goals to his name, ahead of the likes Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski.

Writing in his column for the Times, former player Cascarino raved about the striker’s display in midweek and mentions that one of his goals reminded him of two Premier League greats.

When analysing Kane’s hat-trick goal, Cascarino wrote: “Watching this goal, I was immediately reminded of Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes.

“He has the ball more than 40 yards from goal and sends an inch-perfect pass to the wing back, Kieran Trippier, on the right.

“Kane then makes a direct run for the box before heading home the cross. It was a classic central midfielder’s goal.

“You might say that the best strikers have to score all sorts of goals but it wasn’t so much about the finishes.

“Instead, it was the standard of his overall play that told me his all-round game is improving all the time.”

OPINION

This is potentially the first time where a pundit has compared Kane to a midfielder. Cascarino makes a good point in claiming his third goal as that of a “classic central midfielder” because the Spurs man started and finishes off the move himself. Following his performance in midweek, there is little doubt that Kane should be regarded as one of the best strikers in football right now but he could potentially slot into the midfield role during the latter stages of his career. Although he might not possess the mobility to get around the pitch in the midfield, Kane could do a similar job to that of Scholes and Lampard and become a goalscoring midfielder.
