Jamie Redknapp has hailed Sergio Aguero as the best Premier League finisher since Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler.

Manchester City striker Aguero has begun the season in excellent form in Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring side.

The Argentina international, 29, has scored seven goals in seven matches and also supplied three assists to answer critics who feel he is not ideally suited to Guardiola’s high pressing style of play

Aguero took his City tally to a remarkable 176 goals from 260 matches on Saturday, when he scored in his side’s 5-0 demolition of bottom club Crystal Palace.

“Aguero has a renewed hunger and is looking sharper than ever,” Redknapp wrote in his Mail column. “He is explosive over five yards and is the Premier League’s best out-and-out finisher since Robbie Fowler.”

OPINION

Fowler is still idolised at Liverpool, where his combination of cheeky scousness, affinity with the club and brilliant centre-forward play made him one of the most popular players to ever don the red jersey. Even when his legs had started to go and the injuries had caught up with him, Fowler retained a peerless ability to retain composure in and around the penalty area, and stroke, bang or head the ball unerringly into the corners. Redknapp played in the same team as Fowler for many years and is well placed to comment on both his former colleague and how he compares to all the Premier League forwards of the last 20 years. It is a huge compliment to Fowler that the high profile pundit believes only Aguero can compare to him in terms of finishing, but also a huge compliment to the Argentine. Fowler was that good.
