Manchester City are reportedly set to open negotiations with playmaker Kevin de Bruyne following his fantastic start to the new campaign.

The Telegraph reports that the Premier League top toppers are prepared to double the 26-year-old’s yearly salary to £6million and the player himself is happy to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.

City are set to hold official talks with the player’s agent Patrick De Koster in the upcoming weeks.

Good move for Manchester City?

This is a very smart move from Pep Guardiola as he needs to make sure that one of his most important players is tied up to a long-term contract as soon as possible.

The Belgium has been in sensational form for City in the early stages of the campaign, contributing with four assists in just six matches in all competitions.

The attacking midfielder appears to be thriving under the former Barcelona manager as he also provided a whopping 23 assists in all competitions last season as enjoyed playing in a more central role.

City appear to be genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season and De Bruyne could be pivotal in helping them to a memorable campaign.

Likely to happen?

The report mentions that there been preliminary discussions between the two parties about a potential extension which means that an agreement is likely to be reached sooner rather than later.

Any player would be delighted to hear that their club is willing to double his wages but what would encourage him more is the way that they have started the season both domestically and in the Champions League.

If De Bruyne continues with his purple patch at the start of the season, there might be more clubs looking to secure his signature and City appear to be preparing for this and sign him up on a long-term deal.
