Manchester United are reportedly plotting to sign Atletico Madrid ace Saul Niguez and Roma defensive midfielder Radja Nainggolan.

The Daily Star reports that United boss Jose Mourinho sent out two of his scouts to watch the midfield duo in the Champions League match between the two clubs in midweek.

The report claims that the Manchester club are looking to find a long-term replacement for club captain Michael Carrick.

Good move for Manchester United?

Both Saul and Nainggolan would be excellent additions to the current crop of players in the United first-team squad.

Saul, 22, has become an important member at Atletico and he has a knack of scoring crucial goals from midfield, notching up nine goals in his last two seasons in all competitions.

The Spaniard is an ideal candidate and he would easily become a firm favourite with Mourinho and the fans as his work-rate in one of the best in the league.

Nainggolan, 29, has recently been previously linked with a move to Old Trafford and it’s no surprise given his ability to defend well and also produce an attacking outlet.

The midfielder has been one of the main reasons why Roma have become the closest title challengers to Juventus over the past couple of seasons.

Likely to happen?

United will have to splash the cash and tease both European clubs with substantial bids in order to persuade them to sell their best assets.

Nainggolan recently put pen to paper on a new deal in the summer and Saul also signed a new contract with the Madrid team which will see him remain there until 2026.

Both potential deals could depend on how United perform over the course of the season and with new recruit Nemanja Matic excelling in the early part of the campaign, Mourinho might decide to pursue one of the two midfielders in the summer.
