Everton are reportedly one of the clubs leading the race to sign FC Liverpool Montevideo starlet Federico Martinez.

The Sun reports that the Toffees are one of the favourites alongside La Liga giants Atletico Madrid to land the 21-year-old winger who has been compared to Paris Saint-Germain ace Angel del Maria.

The newspaper claims that that fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and West Ham United have both been previously linked with the youngster.

Good move for Everton?

Given that the Toffees have endured a poor start to the new campaign, it is no surprise that they are being linked with new players.

Martinez made his breakthrough into the first-team for the top-flight Uruguayan side during the 2015-16 season where he managed to contribute with two assists in 16 matches in all competitions.

The youngster has continued to impress for the Liverpool, scoring an outstanding goal in the 2-1 defeat to table topping Peñarol last month.

Liverpool have not started the season well, only picking up one victory in their opening four league matches of the new campaign in South America.

Although the youngster is showing signs that he has the potential to become a top player, Everton must concentrate on bringing in experience rather than relying solely on youth.

Manager Ronald Koeman decided to sign youngsters such as Sandro Ramirez and Jordan Pickford this summer but if he wants to make further additions to the squad, he needs to invest in players with vast experience at the top level in order to restore belief at Goodison Park this season.

Likely to happen?

During the past summer window, Everton demonstrated that they are capable of attracting players to the club, acquiring the services of Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

However, the report claims that Atletico are also keen on signing the youngster and the player might prefer a move to Spain with the chance to play regular Champions League football under Diego Simeone.

The Toffees must try and demonstrate to Martinez that they have a fine record of getting the best out of young talent with forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin being the perfect example.
