Leeds striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga has said that he wasn’t really aware of Chris Wood before he came to Leeds, but that he’s doing a good job for Burnley in the Premier League.

Lasogga was talking in the press conference ahead of the Cardiff game in the Championship on Tuesday night.

He also revealed how happy he was to score straight away for Leeds – and how important that is for a new striker.

“I think it’s very important for a striker to come to a new club and score directly,” Lasogga said. “It gives you confidence and a good feeling for the next games.

“Because you never know when you come new what will happen. It’s good when the coach stands behind you and lets you play. I’m happy.”

Lasogga joined Leeds on loan from Hamburger SV and has made four Championship appearances.

He scored twice in his first game against Burton and added another in the 3-2 win against Ipswich on Saturday.

He also put in a shift against Burnley in the EFL Cup, coming on late for Jay-Roy Grot and having to play 30 minutes of extra time on top.

He found himself up against Leeds’ star striker from last season, Chris Wood.

Asked what he thought of Wood, Lasogga said: “I wasn’t looking at the Championship before I came to Leeds.

“I didn’t know what Chris Wood was doing for Leeds, but he’s a number nine and wants to score goals like me.

“I think he makes a good job in the Premier League from what I’ve seen.”

Lasogga was also asked if he had a goals target for the season, given that Wood scored 27 and top-scored last season – and he replied that he wants to score in every match.

“I never have a target for the season,” Lasogga said. “I go in every match and want to score, but you never know, so I never have a target.”

Leeds travel to Cardiff for the Championship clash, which kicks off at 7.45pm on Tuesday.

OPINION

Lasogga came as a bit of an unknown quantity to Leeds but optimistic fans pointed to the fact that he had performed in the Bundesliga. He started scoring straight away and that’s meant he won over the Leeds fans immediately, and this interview will help his profile immensely. His girlfriend gave birth last week but he kept it quiet so he could play in the vital Championship game against Ipswich on Saturday. Leeds fans will absolutely love that sort of commitment. He’s humble and performs where it matters.
