Ashley Williams completed 90 minutes for Everton in their draw against Hajduk Split on Thursday night – and the club’s supporters were highly critical of his performance on Twitter.

The Toffees managed to book their place in the Europa League group stages due to a 1-1 away draw against the Croatian side, which gave them a 3-1 victory on aggregate.

Hajduk Split made it a tight contest as Josip Radosevic scored a superb long-range effort in the 43rd minute to decrease the deficit to just one.

However, Gylfi Sigurdsson put the game to bed with a crucial away goal shortly after half-time and he scored a memorable lobbed effort from 45 yards on his first full start for the Merseyside club.

Everton were made to work in the second leg and Williams was guilty of conceding a penalty in the second-half.

The 33-year-old defender lunged in from behind in the penalty area and thankfully his teammate Jordan Pickford in goal bailed him out with a great save from the spot kick.

Everton fans were still frustrated after the match despite their progression to the group stages and believe that Williams once again struggled.

Williams has been the preferred centre-back option alongside summer signing Micheal Keane so far this season, but does face competition from Phil Jagielka for a place in the starting XI.

The Wales international is considered to be a senior player in the squad and that is highlighted even more by the amount of faith manager Ronald Koeman shows in young players.

Williams will be keen to set the example to his peers, but was guilty of giving away a number of needless fouls against Hajduk Split as he tried to win possession.

Everton now turn their attention to a Premier League clash away to Chelsea at the weekend and the centre-back will hope to retain his spot in the starting line-up.
