Wright: Arsenal must try and sign Costa

|

Ian Wright believes that Arsenal should attempt to bring wantaway Chelsea striker Diego Costa to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

The 28-year-old does not appear to have a future with the Premier League champions after he publicly revealed that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte informed him that he is no longer required at the club.

The striker has not been involved in Chelsea’s pre-season preparations and he is not expected to feature in their opening match against Burnley at Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Writing in his column for the Sun, Wright feels that his former club should do everything possible to lure the player to North London despite speculation that he could return to Spain this summer.

“To be honest, as fanciful and unlikely as it may be, I’d also like to see Arsenal at least dipping their toe in the water for Diego Costa as well,” he said.

“For all the talk of him going back to Spain, nothing’s been done yet, so at least ask the question.

“Because for all he can be troublesome, he is also a brilliant, proven Prem goalscorer.”

Costa has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers since securing a permanent move from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in 2014.

The Spain international was in sensational form for the Blues last season, finishing as the club’s top goalscorer with 22 goals in all competitions.

The striker has been pivotal in helping Chelsea lift two Premier League titles and a League Cup in just three years.

Costa currently has two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge.

OPINION

Although Costa has demonstrated that he is capable of leading the line for a Premier League winning side, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is highly unlikely to pursue the striker this summer. Costa appears to be a very troublesome character both on and off the pitch and the Frenchman will not want to have such a player in the dressing room. However, it would be interesting to see how Chelsea react should the Gunners decide to chase the striker as they have already proven that they are willing to sell important players to their main league rivals with Nemanja Matic securing a summer move to Manchester United.
