Newcastle completed the £5million signing of forward Joselu from Stoke on Wednesday and he could turn out to be a brilliant piece of business given the current state of the transfer market.

Everyone knows that teams that stay in the Premier League need goalscorers in their side and the Magpies will be looking to stay clear of a relegation battle this summer.

The North East club do have capable strikers Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic, who could both find purple patches of form to score goals in the top flight.

However, there has been a vacant gap at St James’ Park in attack and Rafael Benitez has decided to fill it with Stoke outcast Joselu.

Newcastle fans have grown frustrated at seeing the likes of Watford spend £18.5million on Andre Gray and West Brom pay £12million for Jay Rodriguez.

Owner Mike Ashley has made it clear that the club will not be able to compete in the transfer market with many Premier League sides and that has forced Benitez’s hand into trying to find bargain buys.

Joselu could turn out to be an absolute steal at £5million when you consider Championship side Middlesbrough have splashed out £15million on Britt Assombalonga.

Joselu has arrived at St James’ Park with a desire to prove himself in English football after a frustrating spell at Stoke.

However, the Spaniard has shown his qualities elsewhere during his career and the annoyance of several Stoke fans at his departure is a good sign for Newcastle.

He spent the last campaign on loan at Deportivo in La Liga and managed six goals in 24 games, which included a brace against Real Madrid.

The striker will give Benitez the option to rotate his frontline alongside Gayle and Mitrovic, which should give them a better chance to score goals.

Joselu has the potential to reach double figures in the new season if he hits the ground running and that would prove £5million to be real value for money.

The target man was prolific during his time in Germany, scoring 14 goals in just 33 appearances for Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Many Newcastle fans are frustrated with the lack of spending this summer, but should trust that Benitez is doing what he can with the funds available and is making signings he believe can make an impact on his squad.
