Newcastle must pull out all the stops to try hijack Watford’s reported move for Burnley striker Andre Gray.

Sky Sports claim that Watford are closing in on a £11.5million deal for the Premier League ace.

It is understood that the London club have agreed a deal with Burnley for the 26-year-old that could rise to £18million with add-ons.

The Englishman is now set to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical before completing a move to Vicarage Road.

However, Newcastle should consider a remarkable late swoop for a player that they have already been interested in this summer.

Gray has rejected a new contract offer at Turf Moor and seems destined to leave this summer, but has proven he can perform in the top flight during his stay with the Clarets.

The pacy central striker made 36 appearances across all competitions last season and chipped inwith 10 goals, while his all round play also helps link up with teammates.

Rafael Benitez still needs to make some marquee signings before the close of the transfer window and a £11.5million deal for Gray would represent excellent value for money.

The forward has risen from non-league football to the Premier League and only looks set to keep improving, with some Burnley fans even suggesting he could break into the England set-up.

Watford appear to have won the race for Gray, but there would still be an opportunity for Newcastle to pounce and bring him to St James’ Park if personal terms can’t be agreed.
