OPINION

Newcastle are reportedly one of three clubs keen on Southampton forward Shane Long.

The Times claim that the Magpies are in the race for the 30-year-old alongside Premier League rivals Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Long is an experienced player in the top flight and has been with Southampton since 2014, but has slipped down the pecking order recently.

The Republic of Ireland international is renowned for his electric pace and incredible work-rate, something that makes him a nightmare for Premier League defences.

Good move for Newcastle?

Rafael Benitez desperately still needs a couple of high-profile signings before the close of the window as his current squad look like they could be in a relegation battle.

Long may not be a prolific goalscorer, but he would certainly be a superb addition at St James’ Park.

The striker is an extremely underrated player in the Premier League and his goal return would certainly improve if given more regular game time.

He managed 13 goals in 34 appearances during the 2015/16 season and can be unplayable when he hits top form.

Long would be able to compete for a starting XI position alongside Dwight Gayle, Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic and has vital top-flight experience.

Likely to happen?

This deal seems a long way off right now as Newcastle are just one of the clubs interested in Long, while it’s still unclear if Southampton would be willing to sell the striker.

He has made just two substitute appearances so far and appears to be behind both Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini in the pecking order.

The hard working forward would be exactly the type of mid-range signing that Newcastle could realistically make and would represent good value for money

However, at this stage it appears like Long will remain at St Mary’s to fight for a starting position.
