OPINION

Newcastle have reportedly made new contact with Inter Milan for forward Stevan Jovetic as they aim to add further firepower to last season’s promotion winning squad.

Italian news outlet Tutto Mercato Web claimed on their website on Wednesday that the Magpies will “tomorrow” make a new approach for the 27-year-old Montenegro international captain with Rafa Benitez seeing him as key to his plans.

Jovetic’s last appearance came for Inter in November last year after being sent out on loan to Sevilla in the last campaign, while he is still contracted to the San Siro giants until 2019.

Here, This Is Futbol weighs up whether bringing Jovetic in would be a good move for Newcastle and if it is likely to happen for the north east giants.

Good move for Newcastle?

Jovetic joining Newcastle would certainly help take away the fact that the Magpies have had a fairly disappointing summer after last season’s title-winning success.

The 46-time capped Montenegro international captain has shown moments of class through his career, which have seen him play for such clubs as Manchester City, Inter Milan and Sevilla.

During his time at City he lifted the Premier League title, playing 44 times in total for the cash-rich side and returning 11 goals and six assists.

Some felt that he was hard done by not to get a regular run in the first team at Manchester City and if he brought that form with him to Newcastle then he would surely be a class above the rest of the Magpies’ squad.

Likely to happen?

According to the TMW report Benitez sees Jovetic as key to his plans and if that is true and Newcastle don’t sign him then surely that would be the final straw for the Spaniard, who has reportedly been very frustrated at the club’s dealings this summer.

The Magpies’ hierarchy have also see their side fall to three defeats in their first three matches in  all competitions this season and that could now give the kick those in charge need to invest in the squad with the dangers of relegation looming.

Therefore, with that in mind alongside Newcastle repeatedly being linked with a move to Jovetic it looks like there is some weight to the links and fans may now start to begin to get excited.
