Despite scoring a brace in Leeds’ opening match of the 2017-18 season against Bolton, Phillips’ failed to have an impact against Preston and could now find himself in danger of being dropped.

The 21-year-old is still expected to start alongside Eunan O’Kane in the middle of the park but teenager Ronaldo Vieira shone in the Carabao Cup tie against Port Vale, which will still be fresh in Christiansen’s thinking.

Phillips must prove his worth against Fulham on Tuesday night, or he will be replaced by Vieira on Saturday as Leeds travel to Sunderland.
