Paul Merson believes that Tottenham would become Premier League champions in the new season if they were playing at White Hart Lane.

The north London club will be using Wembley Stadium as their home ground in the 2017/18 campaign, while the construction on their new ground is completed.

Spurs will be hoping that it doesn’t impact their title aspirations and they will be looking for a first ever Premier League crown.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been in contention for the past two seasons and will go into the new year hopeful they can finally get over the line in the title race.

They went unbeaten last season at home and making White Hart Lane a fortress was a huge bonus for them, but struggled to make the same impact during their away matches.

Sky Sports pundit Merson feels that Spurs would be champions in the upcoming season if they were still at White Hart Lane, but is predicting a third-placed finish, instead.

“If Tottenham were playing at White Hart Lane I’d have them as champions,” Merson told Sky Sports. “They’ve got the best team, they haven’t had to buy anybody. They will miss Walker surging forward, but Kieran Trippier is a great replacement.

“I just think of them playing away from home for 38 games; they didn’t have the greatest away record last year but had a superb home record. They worry me in that sense, but I still think they could finish third. They do need a couple more squad players before the end of the window, however.”

OPINION

Spurs’ form at Wembley last season in Europe suggests what a tough season they could be in for and it will take time to get used to. They certainly have the qualities to challenge for the title and can’t be underestimated by any of their rival. Pocehttino has the starting XI that can compete with any team in the Premier League and needs a few additions to bolster his squad. How Spurs deal with Wembley could be a deciding factor in their new campaign and they need to show home form early when they welcome Chelsea. Meanwhile, most teams will treat Spurs away as a cup final and that could leave them at a disadvantage in the title race.
