Alan Shearer doesn’t believe that Arsenal are capable of winning the Premier League title in the new season and feels they have failed to strengthen enough in the summer window.

The Gunners picked up a morale boosting victory over rivals Chelsea on Sunday to win the Community Shield on penalties.

Arsene Wenger’s side won the shootout, which was under the new ABBA format, with relative ease after scoring all four of their penalties.

The game had finished 1-1 in 90 minutes and summer arrival Sead Kolasinac scored his first goal in an Arsenal shirt with a powerful header to cancel out Victor Moses’ strike.

Alexandre Lacazette was also handed a competitive debut for the north London club and the striker went closing to opening his account with a curling effort striking the post.

However, Shearer is not convinced that Wenger has done enough business in the transfer window and insists they are short of challenging for the league title.

“I don’t see Arsenal winning the league,” Shearer wrote in the Sun. “They will have their brilliant moments again, as they have had for a long time.
But I don’t see them being able to sustain that for a whole season.

“Lacazette and yesterday’s goalscorer, Sead Kolasinac, are their only two signings this summer. That is not enough for the Gunners if they want to be challenging for the title, which is ultimately what their supporters want.”

OPINION

Shearer is convinced that Arsenal will be able to challenge the two Manchester clubs for the title, but they should not be so easily ruled out. The Gunners are going to be a real threat in the new campaign, especially if they can have a frontline of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Oil and Lacazette. Arsenal probably could do with one or two extra signings for their squad before the window closes, but the base if their to mount a title challenge. Both Arsenal and Chelsea were missing key players in the Community Shield final and it was the former who appeared to have the stronger squad.
