Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez still has a lot of work to do before the summer transfer window slams shut on Thursday, according to a reliable journalist.

Mark Douglas, Newcastle editor for the Chronicle, says that one signing that is looking “likely” is Kenedy from Premier League champions Chelsea.

The 21-year-old left-back is reported to be hooking up with the squad at St James’ Park on a season-long loan deal.

However, even if he does join, Newcastle will remain in the market for two more players, with Douglas stating that they’re still looking for a striker and a goalkeeper.

OPINION

It’s been a long summer for Newcastle fans and now it’s come down to almost the last 48 hours of the window. Kenedy would be a decent addition to the sqaud but it’s fair to say things have gone backwards since Newcastle started life in the Premier League. A 3-0 win against West Ham was their first of the season and lifted the gloom slightly, but it was marred with the news that striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been charged with violent conduct and could be banned for three games, just as he was putting a scoring run together. Benitez has been after a goalkeeper all summer but the priority has to be a striker now. Mitrovic could be out for a spell on the sidelines and can he be trusted when he gets back? Benitez really needs someone capable of scoring 15 goals in the Premier League and they’re not easy or cheap to find. The next 48 hours are going to be interesting.
