Cardiff have reportedly been blocked in their attempts to sign Preston left-back Greg Cunningham and that should tempt Leeds to swoop in and table a new offer.

HITC Sport claim the 26-year-old was the subject of a £2million bid from Cardiff, who are looking to replace Joe Bennett as the former Aston Villa defender edges closer to joining promotion contenders Fulham.

However, it is said that Cardiff have seen such an offer rejected and it remains to be seen if they will make another bid for Cunningham, who has captained the Lilywhites in their opening three Championship fixtures this season.

Leeds could still be in the market for a new left-back after losing Charlie Taylor to Premier League side Burnley earlier in the transfer window.

Head coach Thomas Christiansen has brought in Cameron Borthwick-Jackson to Elland Road on loan this summer, but has little competition for the Manchester United defender.

Tyler Denton is not yet considered ready for first-team football with only three first-team appearances under his belt, and a move to sign four-time Ireland international Cunningham could be made in the next two weeks.

Known for his defensive rigidity on the left side of defence, former Manchester City youth player Cunningham added a creative prowess to his repertoire last season during his 40 Championship appearances.

Providing the Lilywhites with five assists, Cunningham even found the back of the net once against Sheffield Wednesday on New Year’s Eve and would offer more than just defensive know how to the Leeds squad.

Borthwick-Jackson has started well but he managed just seven appearances on loan at Wolves last season, and the jury is still out on whether he can be Leeds’ long-term replacement for Taylor.

With 156 second-tier appearances to his name, Preston’s number three knows the division like the back of his hand and would prove a crucial addition in Leeds’ promotion chase.
